Shanghai Genomics, Inc., a Chinese drug discovery and development company, was founded in August 2001 by returnees Dr. Ying Luo and Dr. Jun Wu with funding of  76.5 million RMB from the Shanghai Venture Capital Company and the Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park Corporation.  In 2005, Shanghai Genomics combined with GNI, Ltd., an international pharmaceutical development company headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.  The company currently employs more than 100 people with about 80% of them, including 16 Ph.D. scientists, in research and development.  SG occupies a 40,000-square-foot building, one of the most modern laboratory facilities in China, in dynamic, metropolitan Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park.  GNI, Ltd. went public on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on August 31, 2007.

          Shanghai Genomics’ mission is to develop novel therapeutic products for diseases prevalent in Asia, especially in the areas of lung fibrosis, liver fibrosis, cancer, and new biomaterials for bone healing.  Leveraging its highly efficient drug registration team and extensive nationwide clinical research network, it provides drug registration services and operates as a clinical research organization (CRO).  Shanghai Genomics has also built an integrated drug discovery and development platform, including signaling pathway mapping, gene expression profile studies, protein expression and purification, knock-down/knock-out, in vivo animal modeling, antibody generation and purification, and bioinformatics.  These programs have resulted in contracts/collaborative research services with pharmaceutical companies worldwide. The company’s research reagent products have also been sold to research institutes, hospitals and biomedical companies globally.

          With its well-trained technical staff and outstanding research capabilities Shanghai Genomics has received extensive coverage by worldwide media organizations, such as the Wall Street Journal, Asian Wall Street Journal and many other well-known media groups in China.  The founders of Shanghai Genomics are frequently invited to speak at international conferences to represent China’s many fast-growing biopharmaceutical companies.  Shanghai Genomics’ executive team believes that the company’s complementary platforms, advanced technologies and instruments, highly efficient research group, and modern management approach ensures a promising future for the company.
